Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Astro Boy, was born in Tokonaka City in Osaka on November 3rd 1928.

He grew up in nearby Takarazuka.

In 1945, at the age of 17, he debuted as a cartoonist in a Mainichi Newspaper with his serialised cartoon strip

"Ma-Chan no Nikki".

*He produced the first Manga for "Jungle Taitei"

(Jungle Emperor Leo / Kimba the White Lion) in 1950.

*He produced the first Manga for "Tesuwan Atomu"

(Mighty Atom/ Astro Boy) in 1951.

A Mushi Production

193 episodes were produced.

Broadcast on Fuji TV (Japan).

The original Black & White TV series began on Japanese TV on the first of January 1963.

The original Black & White TV series finished on Japanese TV on the thirty first of December 1966.

The show was watched in Japan by up to 40% of television viewers.

*The English adaptation was produced by Fred Ladd.

*Billy Lou Watt provided the voice of Astro Boy in the English adaptation.

He produced a total of 150,000 hand drawn Manga pages and 400 paper back titles during his life.He died on February 9th 1989.

* The new 3-D animated movie based on Astro Boy will premier on the 23rd of October 2009.

The movie is produced by Tezuka Productions Co. LTD / Imagi International Holdings LTD.

The film stars Freddie Highmere as Astro Boy, Nicolas Cage as Professor Tenma.

The film also features Donald Sutherland.
